Darwin Wildlife Sanctuary has worked closely with other youth diversion programs and centres over the last 3 years and specialises in working with Young People that are disengaged from mainstream education and have been involved with or are currently detained within the youth justice system.
These sessions are about encouraging young people to engage with presenters, wildlife and country and gives them an opportunity to push themselves in a safe and supportive environment. The sessions can also include literacy and numeracy exercises when combined with our specialised lesson plans that are mapped back to positive learning outcomes and are tailored especially for Young People with low to no literacy/language/numeracy skills.
Our presenters have years of experience working with Young People who are disengaged, detained and have mental health issues. They can be relied upon to treat all students with understanding and respect without losing their capacity to make sure the Young People also demonstrate that same understanding and respect for the presenters and the animals. Working agreements are a practice we employ to ensure everyone's boundaries and expectations are being expressed, acknowledged and adhered to during the sessions. This creates a safe, open and supportive environment for Young People to begin their journey of becoming engaged with society again.
